Week 2 Part 2: What is the question I would like to research/

Week 2 Essential question part 2:  What is the question I would like to research over the next 8 weeks?

How can I use technology to meet the rigors of the mathematical common core standards with respect to Modeling?  The Mathematical Common Core Standards place an emphasis on mathematical modeling.  In order to meet these standards, my plan is to replace several of the traditional paper and pencil quizzes with more rigorous modeling questions that will be done using technology resources and will involve group projects, group discussion, and a variety of methods for students to present their ideas and results.  Tech resources will include but are not limited to graphing calculators, web research, multimedia presentations, spreadsheets or other data organization, and interactive response systems.  Instruction will include traditional teaching and flipped learning using video lessons I create as well as Khan Academy.  The effectiveness of this effort will be determined through observation during group work, presentations made by individuals and groups, and results of interactive response system questions.

  1. student collaboration, students teach each other the math computations, to teach is to learn :)

  2. I love math. Math rules! Promote enthusiasm for concept love. Math is the essence. Extra credit for student problem presentation for classmates. Teach each other, breakout groups...different approach might work, building enthusiasm and engagement for the subject, the best subject ever, I believe.

  3. didn't figure out editing for blog and remembered to add...students could practice rehearsal for problem solving delivery then record the perfected problem resolution process, utilizing screencast-o-matic for producing a video, post the video to youtube (ideas learned from EDET S628), then pass on the link. :)

  4. Sounds like an awesome question. Your idea to use more technology in our lessons sound really fun. I've been trying to use more group/partner work in my class and am working them toward class presentations, but they are 3rd graders and not always interested in talking in front of the class. My biggest hook would be having them make a flipchart for the Promethean to share their math project.

  6. I think your question is great, and I look forward to learning what you find out! I have been making a lot of instructional videos this year using my document viewer, screencast-o-matic (free screen shot video program from internet), and cartoons (goanimate). Good luck!
